Sacramento, CA – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom opposed Proposition 44, the flawed and cynical measure that would strip access to health care for millions of California patients. The measure would devastate community clinics, forcing hundreds to reduce services or close their doors altogether.

“Prop 44 is a direct attack on California’s most vulnerable patients,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “This initiative would harm millions of patients by shutting down hundreds of community health clinics and forcing clinics to cut back on vital patient services. Vote NO on Prop 44!”

Prop 44 threatens access to care for the 7 million patients who rely on community health clinics, including children, working families, the uninsured, seniors, veterans, and 1 in 3 Medi-Cal patients. In many rural and medically underserved communities, community health clinics are the only source of care for hundreds of miles. If clinics are forced to close, millions of patients will have nowhere to turn for care.

“We applaud the Governor’s leadership and his commitment to patients in communities across California, and we’re pleased to have him join our broad coalition of more than 300 organizations, 1,000 community clinics and patients across the state in opposing Prop 44,” said Francisco Silva, President & CEO, California Primary Care Association. “We cannot let patients be used as pawns, which is exactly what Prop 44 does. As we look ahead to Election Day, we are focused on ensuring every voter in California knows just how dangerous this measure is and that they vote NO.”
