San Diego, CA – The California Democratic Party (CADEM) joined the broad and growing coalition of patients, healthcare providers, civil justice advocates and community leaders in their opposition to Proposition 44 at this weekend’s Executive Board meeting in San Diego. Ahead of the vote, representatives from the No on Prop 44 campaign spoke to the party’s resolutions committee.

“Planned Parenthood Affiliates of CA opposes Prop 44 because we know how important community clinics are to the state’s health care safety net and that threats to their ability to deliver care ripples across the entire network,” Jodi Hicks said to the CADEM Executive Board Resolutions Committee. “Don’t let this unnecessary measure further strip community clinics of critical funds and make it even harder for the most vulnerable Californians to access essential healthcare,” she told the group.

An independent study by the Berkeley Research Group found that Prop 44 would cut $1.7 billion from California’s community health clinics in the first year alone and billions thereafter. As a result, clinics that care for millions of patients every year would be forced to cut back patient services and even shut down, jeopardizing access to care.

“I’m a proud patient and board member of my local community clinic, and because of the care I get there, I was able to have both my diabetes and cancer detected early enough to be treatable,” Fred Dorsey, San Ysidro Health patient and board member, said to delegates at the Resolutions Committee. “I’m happy to report I’m two years cancer free, thanks to my community clinic. Prop 44 will threaten other patients like me being able to get the care they need, and I urge everyone to vote no on this dangerous measure.”

Clinic closures and a reduction in services as a result of Prop 44 will lead patients to skip vital preventive care, increasing emergency room visits and worsening overcrowding and wait times for all patients.
